Linda was convinced that she had raised her son well. He was about to marry a pretty girl and they had already planned to start a joint business. However, a simple speech by the bridesmaid ruined her son’s image.
I have always considered myself a good mother. I tried my best not to be a helicopter mom or one of those obnoxious “boy moms” you see on the internet today. I taught him to respect women and the elderly and to stand up for the weak, and he became a true gentleman. So when my son Connor brought his girlfriend, Carrie, home, I welcomed her with open arms. Who would have thought their marriage would turn into a disaster!

Of course, I did some research. She seemed like an ordinary girl: she drove a relatively cheap old car and took public transport when it eventually broke down, did not ask my son for expensive gifts, and the gifts she gave us, although tasteful, were never large sums.
I knew she occasionally treated herself to a spa weekend or a meal at a fancy establishment, but I chalked it up to her ability to save money. After all, every girl deserves a treat every now and then, don’t you think?

Imagine my surprise when we made an appointment with his parents and a luxury car came to pick us up! It turned out that his father owned a renowned construction company, which allowed the family to spend lavishly.
When I asked them how their daughter could live so modestly, her mother explained their agreement. They refused to finance her daily expenses, but would support her if she ever decided to start her own business. And, of course, they would pay for their daughter’s dream wedding.

As Carrie explained that she didn’t have a business plan in mind yet, I saw Connor’s eyes light up. He’d dreamed of starting a tech company for a long time, but we’d never had that kind of money and he’d had no luck with grants, so naturally, he saw this as a perfect opportunity.
When he explained his idea to Carrie on the way home, she immediately agreed. They talked about it nonstop and I was excited to see them planning their business as a future family. Carrie even suggested meeting with investors right after they got married. I wish I had known this would all end soon.

As the wedding approached, I noticed Carrie was acting differently. She was doing her best to meet my son’s expectations for their business, but I could see that deep down, she was struggling.
When I asked her if there was a problem, she politely dismissed my concerns. I thought about family problems or a small fight with Connor, but I have to be honest, the idea of a possible pregnancy also crossed my mind. However, I decided to keep quiet for a while and let the kids sort things out on their own.

On the wedding day, Carrie seemed particularly anxious, but I ignored her. She was the bride, after all, and her father had invited a lot of influential people—who wouldn’t be nervous? As she made her way to her place at the table, nodding and accepting compliments, I noticed her maid of honor, Susan, discussing something with Connor.
They were clearly having a heated discussion, which startled me, but at that moment I knew better than to interfere. Deep in my heart I felt a disaster was brewing.

When it was time for the speeches, the room fell silent as the maid of honor raised her glass. The expression on her face was that of someone who knew her death was near. She began her speech with the usual thanks and pleasantries, then she dropped a bombshell .
“Carrie. You’ve been my best friend for years and years. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same about myself. This whole thing…has to stop. Connor and I have been having an affair for months!”

Silence fell, eyes turned to the bride. To everyone’s surprise, she burst into a loud, almost evil laugh. “Wow, Susie,” she said. “Thank God you had the strength to confess. I thought I was going to have to do it myself!”
“You see,” she stood up and started walking towards Susan, “I knew you couldn’t be trusted from the way you looked at each other. So I set up hidden cameras around the house. And what do you think I saw? Two lovebirds in my love nest!”

She snatched the microphone out of Susan’s hands.
“Thanks to my father, we were able to draw up a nice marriage contract that my future husband signed without reading it. In case you were curious to know what you signed, infidelity will leave you with nothing to your name!”
“But don’t worry people! I’ve added a slow-acting laxative to your cake slices! Enjoy your first night together, bastards!”

The chaos this caused can only be described as a tidal wave. People were running to the bathrooms, spitting out the cake, while the bride and her family watched from afar. Seeing my confusion, Carrie came over to me and took my hand.

“Don’t worry, Mrs. Green. You’ve always been kind to me. You can safely enjoy the cake.”
That day, I left the wedding hall completely devastated. I was sure of only one thing: I didn’t think I knew the man I had raised .
